Abstract: 200-500 words
This dissertation has emerged as a result of the lack of sufficient information about the increasing tendency of institutions to the use of archive and memory in contemporary art exhibitions in Turkey with the reasons and methods of making these kinds of exhibitions. The dissertation, which focuses on the ever-increasing tendencies of archive in contemporary art and the shifting dynamics within that domain, aims to study the why and how of these uses in exhibitions of contemporary art institutitons in the contemporary art scene in Turkey since the 1980s and understanding their impact on contemporary art history. From the 1980s to the present, the study maps the various archival tendencies of art institutions and why these tendencies are evoked in exhibition practises, more specifically the then-to-now configuration of works originating from archives: the type of knowledge they produce via this route, how they treat archival documents in the context of exhibition display, and their affinity to locality and universality. The dissertation utilises mixed method, namely, broad scan of relevant literature review, document analysis and interview. The theoretical framework embodies the relationship between archives and contemporary art as well as data derived from interviews with European L’Internationale member contemporary and modern art institutions. Additionally, interviews were conducted with art institutions which have used archive materials in relation to contemporary art in their exhibition practices with more than one in Turkey. Visual and textual archival documents and exhibitions utilising these materials on a periodic and supplementary basis by art institutions also constitute a quintessential part of the study. As a result, research data indicates how various the purposes of contemporary art institutions are to utilise archive from exhibition practices perspective. These aims are to highlight the artist practices related to archive, to introduce new opinions and different interpretation that go beyond the canonical history of art by revealing unknown, lesser-known and well-known history, to supplement exhibitions, and to use in accordance with the existence of the institution as a result of the tendency to memory studies. In addition to this, it has been detected that archive-based exhibitions provide a foundation for new institutional activities and new narratives out of the canonical history of art.
