Abstract: 200-500 words
The I-Media-Cities project, financed within the HORIZON 2020 Programme of the European Union, aims to share, provide access and valorize the digital collections of the 9 audiovisual partner archives for multidisciplinary research purposes on the European Cities. Specifically, the project will deliver an interoperable and multilingual platform which, thanks to a semantic search engine, visual interfaces, the visual component analysis and other interactive options, will help a growing community of researchers and creatives in their studies. Aim of the present final paper is to design prototype of interface in virtual 3D environment for the visualization of the search results of the semantic search engine developed by CINECA, technical partner of the project, and in particular by Vis.I.T. Lab (CINECA’s laboratory for multimedia applications in the cultural field). The prototype, developed in an independent manner from Vis.I.T. Lab, will be useful to this last as an additional source and inspiration, as it is designed without the actual time and resource limitations and based upon the best practices encountered in the preliminary studies. In the first part of the final paper assesses the advantages of the use of 3D interfaces over the other classic representations and analyzes literature and real cases of visualization of search results in 3D environments. The second part illustrates the prototype developed for this thesis project, while the third and final part reports the development status of Vis.I.T. Lab’s 3D Virtual Collection Creator interface at the present time and the potential usefulness of the prototype within a future continuation of the European project.
